Safety Features Buyers Should Require on Industrial Paper Cutters

Safety should be specified as a functional system, not selected as a list of optional accessories. The buyer must know how the cutter prevents access to the danger zone, how an operator starts a cycle, how the machine stops and how a fault is reset.

Core safeguards to verify

Depending on the machine design and the destination market, the RFQ should address:

  • Two-hand or equivalent controlled activation
  • Front and rear guarding where access is possible
  • Light barriers or other presence-sensing devices when applicable
  • Emergency stops that are reachable from operating positions
  • Interlocks that prevent a cycle when a guard is open
  • Clear status indication and fault reset behavior

The supplier should describe the safety function and provide the relevant documentation. Do not assume that a device is effective merely because its name appears on a quotation.

Test the safety sequence

During FAT, ask the supplier to demonstrate each stop condition using the agreed procedure. Confirm that the knife and clamp stop as specified, that restart requires a deliberate reset and that the machine does not resume unexpectedly after power returns.

At SAT, repeat the tests with the plant’s actual power supply, operator positions and installed guarding. Record test results, serial numbers and unresolved actions. Local regulations and risk assessment remain the buyer’s responsibility; supplier documentation supports that process but does not replace it.

Training is part of safety

Request training for operators, supervisors and maintenance staff. It should cover start-up, normal cycle, jam clearing, knife handling, isolation, emergency stop, fault reset and daily inspection. Provide the same instructions in the working language used on the shop floor.

A safe machine can become unsafe through shortcuts. Supervisors should be able to verify that guards are not bypassed and that only authorized staff perform maintenance near the knife or drive.

Safety questions for the RFQ

Ask what is included in the base configuration, which options are market-dependent, what certificates or declarations are supplied, how safety circuits are tested and what spare parts are critical to the safety function. Put the agreed configuration into the contract and FAT protocol.

Next step

Send Luolan Machinery your destination market, operator arrangement and site constraints. The team can discuss safety configuration and acceptance tests for QZK920, QZK1370C or QZK1300.
